Texas Hold'em Basics
The most popular poker game explained from scratch.
Texas Hold'em is the world's most popular poker variant. It's the game you see on TV, in movies, and played for millions in tournaments. Understanding the rules is easier than you might think, but mastering the strategy takes a lifetime.
The Objective
Win chips by either:
- Having the best hand at showdown, or
- Making everyone else fold so you win without showdown
How a Hand Plays Out
1. Blinds
Two players post forced bets before cards are dealt:
- Small Blind – Half a minimum bet (e.g., $1)
- Big Blind – Full minimum bet (e.g., $2)
2. Pre-Flop
Each player receives 2 cards face-down (hole cards). Betting begins left of the big blind. Options: fold, call (match the big blind), or raise.
3. The Flop
Three community cards are dealt face-up. Another betting round begins from the first active player left of the dealer. Options: check (pass action), bet, call, raise, or fold.
4. The Turn
A fourth community card is dealt. Another betting round. Bets typically double at this stage.
5. The River
The fifth and final community card is dealt. Final betting round.
6. Showdown
If multiple players remain, the best 5-card hand wins using any combination of hole cards and community cards.

Strategy Insight
Position Matters
Where you sit relative to the dealer affects your strategy:
- Early Position – You act first; play very tight
- Middle Position – Slightly looser
- Late Position (Button/Cutoff) – You act last; can play more hands
Pro Tip
Key Concepts for Beginners
- Play tight-aggressive – Play few hands, but play them aggressively
- Don't call too much – Raise or fold; calling is often the weakest option
- Pay attention to opponents – Look for betting patterns
